Osseointegrated dog leg

I don't know why you would want to spend about 30 grand on a pet but check this out

Final Blog

I really liked most of the projects. I did mine on osseointegrated prosthetics. It is essentially a prosthetic that is made by inserting a titanium fixture into the bone. The bone then grows into the titanium so it is secure. An abutment is then inserted into the fixture where you put the prosthetic on from there.

There are many advantages to osseointegration including no skin irritation, etc. I think that the most important advantage though is how weight is distributed when wearing the prosthetic. In normal prosthetics you don't have as much freedom in terms of shifting your weight on the prosthetic. Since the titanium and prosthetic are essentially new limbs that are part of the body, the prosthetic can hold a lot more weight.

Osseointegration originated on teeth and now people are starting to use it for mainly legs. Pets are starting to get the surgery also!

I think the best presentation was actually DJ's osseointegration and artificial limb presentation. He has such a depth of knowledge about the subject of prosthetics, his poster was very professional, his fixture and abutment models were great, and the limb that he brought was really cool.

The tweeting was cool because I saw that people agreed with me over which technologies were the most interesting and giving people props for how hard they worked on it.

The project in general was a lot of fun just because we are essentially looking into the future when we're studying these technologies. I wonder if there will ever be a limit to these technologies?

"Humanness"

I think that in order to be human, one has to be conceived and have the opportunity to grow

Humans are different than all the other creatures on earth. No matter how human-like something is made, it is still not human

paper recap prostheses and aesthetics

The Steelers are 6 and 6: I am having fits....

The bobblehead recap of my paper:
  • Prosthetics were originally about repairing a handicap
  • They were about performance and practicality
  • Mullins represents a transition from prosthetics as performance enhancement to aesthetic enhancement
  • The stigma of the handicap is sort of transformed into the celebration of the bizzarre, not unlike how we see our models, movie stars, etc.
  • THE PROSTHETICS ARE REALLY COOL! (CHEETAH LEGS, JELLYFISH, ETC)

I really enjoyed writing this paper though my focus was probably a little different than most

In pain

We're 6 and 4...I'm about to panic. Ben has a concussion, Batch has a wrist injury...darn.

Anyways these prosthetics and robotic and cyborg issues we brought up in class today got me thinking about the state of sports in the future...when these technologies become run-of-the-mill procedures, how are sports going to deal with them?

Would professional sports leagues have to turn down a player with a bionic eye? Or tell a guy with a cyborg arm that he can't play even though technically he's just handicapped?

This is weird stuff that we're starting to get into because this kind of stuff isn' t fiction anymore. It's becoming real. Which is cool and frightening at the same time because who knows what kind of capabilities people can have in the future...

This riff on cyborg athletes is pretty cool

Whispers in the Loggia

I don't know if you guys know this, but upon graduation I plan on going to seminary to become a Roman Catholic priest.

Whispers in the Loggia is a blog that I use for news mostly about North American Catholic news.

It is amazing the depth that Rocco Palmo goes into in his news. He is an incredible insider.

It is also amazing that he is such an insider and is only 25 years old. He has reliable sources and is well respected among many higher ups in the Catholic Church.

He even streams USCCB meetings online, which is amazing.
